IN MEMORIAM OF CHRISTOS TSIRBAS

c.July 1925 — MARCH 14 2024

Christos Tsirbas of Canberra and formally Adelaide and Coomealla passed away early Thursday morning at the age of 98.

He was one of the last of his generation. He fought the Nazis and the Communists and lived through war and famine and some of the darkest days of modern Greece. He immigrated to Australia in the great post WWII wave of people that changed this country for the better.

He came to Australia like many migrating from Greece and other countries seeking peace, new opportunities and a better future for their children. It was here that he married his wife Chrysoula Lepipas. With no family for support, they worked hard and saved for years to eventually buy a vineyard near Coomealla in outback NSW.

Christos and Chrysoula had three children and pushed them academically to prosper and serve the country that had given to them so much. Christos always had a great love for his adopted country and the opportunities it had afforded him and his family. He always believed in assimilation and leaving foreign troubles behind while at the same time preserving his Greek culture and religion. He was an ardent fan of AFL and Carlton.

Christos is survived by his three children: Angelo Tsirbas, Marina Tsirbas and Nektarios Tsirbas and their respective families. He had eight grandchildren that he adored: Christopher, Luke, Emma, Ivy, Matthew, Christian, Zozo and Edward.

The funeral will be held at St Nicholas Greek Orthodox church, Kingston, Canberra at 11am Wednesday 20th March 2024.
